An affidavit and a statutory declaration are formal legal documents, typically containing a statement of facts, which are sworn or affirmed under oath. An affidavit will explicitly state that the person signing is swearing the contents to be true before a commissioner of oaths or notary public, while a statutory declaration uses a solemn affirmation rather than an oath. Both documents will include a jurat, which is a section at the end where the notary or commissioner confirms that the oath or declaration was properly administered. In contrast, a regular letter or document will not have this legal structure, nor will it require an official witness and a legal affirmation of truth. Affidavits and statutory declarations are typically used for legal proceedings, whereas letters are generally informal and do not carry the same legal weight.
