FAQs

FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • How much do your services cost?

Our services are priced simply to avoid confusion and pass on savings to you. Each document is only $10 (plus HST). There are other charges for certain circumstances. For example, affidavits can sometimes have Exhibits attached, and those need to be signed by the notary. Exhibits are $5 per exhibit in addition to the $10 affidavit commissioning.

  • Why are your costs so low?

Our costs are only seen as low because notaries in Toronto have overcharged for their services for decades. The act of commissioning an oath, notarizing a document, or witnessing a signature takes five minutes (oftentimes less). Notary-toronto.ca firmly believes that the public should not be penalized because of a lack of competition artificially inflating the price.

  • What type of payment methods do you accept?

Our payment model is based on trust. We do not charge for our services at the door. Once you have your document from the notary, you can return home. We then will provide you an invoice that you can pay. Most people take a day or two to pay, and that is totally fine by us. We trust you! This will help you believe that our prices are not for show.

  • Do I need a coloured seal when having my documents notarized?

No. A notarial impression creates a raised edge on the notarized document and has the same legal effect as if there was a coloured seal underneath. Some customers prefer a coloured seal placed over the notarial impression. Notary-toronto.ca charges $1 extra for every coloured seal requested by our clients.

A raised edge impression is not necessary for affidavits/statutory declarations notarized online. We still affix an image of our seal to ensure the receiver knows who we are and can check our legitimacy whenever they want. There are no additional fees for the gold seal image we attach to our online affidavits/statutory declarations.

  • Are your notaries official notaries?

Yes, all of our notaries have been appointed by the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario. In Ontario, a notary public is typically a licensed lawyer or paralegal who has been appointed by the Ministry of the Attorney General to perform notarial acts. In some cases, individuals who are not lawyers may also be appointed as notaries if they meet specific qualifications and apply through the Ministry. Notaries are authorized to witness signatures, administer oaths, and certify true copies of documents for legal and official purposes.

  • Do I need an appointment?

Yes, you need an appointment. Please click the Book an Appointment button found in the top right hand corner of the website.

  • Will the notary look over my document?

The notary will not look over your document before you sign it. The notary is not providing legal advice and cannot consult with you regarding the accuracy of the information. The notary will request your identification to confirm you are who you say you are.

  • Do you guarantee your work?

Yes, Notary Assist Inc. guarantees the work of all of our notaries. In the unlikely event that a mistake occurs and is the fault of the notary, we will re-notarize your document for free and reimburse you if you have already paid. We will not profit off of our mistakes.

  • The document I want notarized is not in English, can you help?

Yes! A notary is not giving advice on the content of the document, rather, confirming that you are the person signing the document or requesting a true copy. The notary will witness your signature or make a true copy of an original document.

  • I need an electronic document notarized, can you help?

Yes! However, you will need to sign into the website to allow the Notary to view the electronic document you wish notarized. The Notary will then print and notarize the document. The Notary will make a note on the document that they have viewed the original online, the website where the document was found, and that it is a true copy of the online version.

  • What is a notary public?

A notary public is a legal professional authorized to witness signatures, administer oaths, and certify true copies of documents. In Ontario, most notaries are lawyers, though non-lawyers may also be appointed under specific conditions.

  • What services does a notary public provide?

Notaries in Ontario can witness the signing of legal documents, certify true copies, administer oaths and affidavits, and notarize documents for use both domestically and internationally.

  • Do I need to bring ID to my appointment?

Yes, you must bring valid government-issued photo identification (HEALTH CARDS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BE USED AS IDs), such as a passport or driver’s license, to verify your identity during your notary appointment.

  • Can I notarize my document online?

Under O.Reg. 431/20, notaries in Ontario can commission affidavits and statutory declarations online through secure audio-visual communication technology. Notaries are not permitted to certify true copies or witness signatures online. For a helpful guide, please consult the following article: Online or In-Person?

  • What is the difference between notarizing a document and commissioning an affidavit?

Notarizing a document involves witnessing a signature and confirming the authenticity of the document and generally requires an in-person appointment. Commissioning an affidavit or statutory declaration involves administering an oath or affirmation that the contents of the affidavit/statutory declaration is true. You can book an in-person or online appointment to notarize an affidavit/statutory declaration.
